In light of recent Internet security breaches that have been brought to everyone's
attention by the media, we have compiled some helpful guidelines to ensure your
security.
Make sure that your Antivirus software is up to date
Ensure that you keep your Antivirus software current, by regularly updating it at
least once a week, as there are many new viruses released. Also ensure that your
subscription renewal service has not expired. If this has happened you will have
to purchase the latest version of the software from either your local computer dealer,
or renew your subscription via the Internet.
Make sure that your operating system is up to date by doing Windows Updates
Microsoft is constantly striving to make their software safe. It is thus vital that
you keep your Windows and Office products up to date. Windows updates are available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
or by opening Internet Explorer and clicking on Tools and Windows Update in Internet
Explorer.
Make sure that your installation of Microsoft Office is up to date, by means
of Web Updates
Office updates are available at http://www.microsoft.com/en-za/download/office.aspx .
Preferably run Pest Patrol to stop key loggers and other possibly hazardous
software
If you use your computer for secure transactions it is strongly recommended that
you utilize software such as Pest Patrol. This software checks your computer to
ensure that there are no key loggers or Trojans installed on your computer, such
as those rumoured to have been used to break into bank accounts in July. This software
is available from http://www.pestpatrol.com/.
Run a personal firewall if you have standalone connectivity, or run a corporate
firewall if you are in a larger corporation
Firewalls are becoming an essential part of internet security. This software forms
an invisible barrier between you and the internet, protecting you from unlawful
access to the data on your computer. If you use a stand alone computer, software
such as Zone Alarms Pro is advisable. Windows XP does come with built in firewall
capabilities. Be sure to ensure that it is activated if you do use XP. Zone Alarms
is available from http://www.zonealarm.com/.
If you are using routing equipment, make sure that all security updates have
been applied
If you are in a corporate environment and make use of routing equipment such as
Cisco routers, be sure to ask the network administrator to ensure that the latest
OS updates are installed. More information is available on the Cisco website http://www.cisco.com/.
