What is VSAT?

VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is a small satellite dish that provides a permanent connection to the Internet throughout SA without the need for a telephone line. VSAT is a logical solution for those that cannot get adequate Internet access via telephone lines, or that fall outside of the ADSL footprint.

VSAT is a compact and cost effective satellite solution for Internet access. It makes use of a small dish (1.5m), which needs a clear, unobstructed view to the northern sky. The satellite dish and the satellite unit (which is kept indoors) are connected via two standard coaxial cables.

Telkom supplies the physical infrastructure. They have 2 main services on offer, namely the SpaceStream Express and the SpaceStream Office.

You can make and receive calls - these are charged at standard Telkom call rates. All Internet access is included in your monthly fee to your ISP. Upon completing the application with Telkom for the VSAT line, the system should be installed within 10 working days.

You need:

1. to sign a contract: a minimum 12 month contract with Telkom upon applying for the service has to be signed;
2. an account with an ISP: iSAT offers this service for only R280 per month and require one month written notice for any cancellations.
